在印尼，官方的马来语被称作印尼语（Bahasa Indonesia），而苏门答腊等地的其他马来语方言，仍然被称作马来语（Bahasa Melayu）。

在分类上，马来语属于南岛语系——印度尼西亚语族——马来—松巴哇语支——马来语群。

有一些语言与马来语非常接近，比如米南加保语、班查尔语等等。

语言学家将马来语及其接近语言归类为马来语群（Malayic languages）。
